Technical User Forum

Capita Technical Services recently held their annual Technical User Forum at the Motorcycle Museum, West Midlands.
The day’s agenda, introduced by Capita Technical Services’ Business Manager, Jon Peart, was driven by a mixture of current issues, such as GCSX Code of Connection (CoCo) and system security. Solutions detailing how Capita Technical Services can help customers with their CoCo compliance, specifically around hardening and patching and vulnerability scanning, were also key topics, along with the identification of future issues that Capita Technical Services can assist with – from virtualisation to upgrades.

Speaker Julian Regel, Capita Software Services (CSS) Infrastructure Solutions Manager, offered a very informative update on Ingres OpenRoad and its future strategy. Julian also discussed current platforms supported by CSS, along with cutting-edge technology, such as Solaris Containers, the ZFS filesystem and Volume Manager. Julian’s presentation concluded with an update on services available from CSS relating to the current concern of virtualisation. He identified the benefits of these services and went on to discuss how they can help companies achieve their virtualisation goal.

Following lunch, an opportunity for delegates and speakers to meet and discuss the forum’s topics, CSS Technical Solutions Architect, Jon Whiteman, engaged the audience with demonstrations of Capita’s Network Monitoring solution. He also elaborated on server hardening and software patching. Dave Whitlegg, CSS IT security Manager, then gave a thorough presentation on security best practices including vulnerability scanning, patch management and PCI DSS requirements.

The day’s other topics for discussion included remote support, network monitoring and pre-paid support vouchers, concluding with an open forum – an opportunity for customers to ask questions on any technical subject or request further information.

In addition to the day’s offerings, all attendees had the chance to win a free ‘Security Healthcheck’, drawn on the day. The winner of this was Luton Borough Council’s Ewan Sidebottom.

All in all, the forum was a great success, with all attendees providing excellent post-event reviews and feedback.
